How to Play Sueca card game – Complete Guide

Sueca is a classic trick-taking card game that originated in Portugal and is widely played in Portuguese-speaking countries. Played in fixed partnerships of two against two, the game emphasizes strategy, memorization, and teamwork.

🔸 Game Setup:
  • Number of players: 4
  • Teams: 2 teams of 2 players. Teammates sit opposite each other.
  • Deck used: 40 cards (remove all 8s, 9s, and 10s from a standard 52-card deck)
🔹 Objective:

The main objective is for a team to win tricks containing more than 60 points (i.e., 61+) in a round. A full game can be played as best of 4 rounds or until a team reaches a set number of wins (e.g., 4 or 10).

Gameplay Rules:

1. Shuffling and Dealing:
  • The dealer is chosen randomly for the first round and rotates clockwise.
  • Each player receives 10 cards, dealt counterclockwise.
  • The last card dealt to the dealer is turned face-up and sets the trump suit.
  • This card remains visible and is added to the dealer’s hand after the first trick begins.
2. Playing the Tricks:
  • The player to the right of the dealer plays the first card.
  • Play continues counterclockwise.
  • Players must follow the suit led if possible.
  • If unable to follow suit, a player may play any card (including a trump).
3. Winning the Trick:
  • The highest card of the suit led wins unless trump is played.
  • If one or more players play a trump, the highest trump wins.
  • The player who wins the trick leads the next.
4. Scoring a Round:
  • Each team adds up the point value of the cards in tricks they’ve won.
  • If a team earns 61+ points, they win the round.
  • 60–60 is a draw.
  • The game continues until a team reaches a predetermined number of rounds.

🧠 Strategy Tips:

  • Track the cards played, especially trumps and high-point cards.
  • Save trump cards for when they will win you valuable tricks.
  • Communicate non-verbally with your teammate through your play choices (within fair rules).
  • Try to control the lead to guide the play flow in your favor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What makes Sueca different from other trick-taking games?

A: Sueca has a unique card ranking and point system, and it’s team-based, adding a layer of strategic coordination.

Q: Can I play a trump card even if I have the suit being led?

A: No. If you have a card of the suit that was led, you must follow it. Only if you do not have any cards of the led suit can you play a trump or another suit.

Q: What is the role of the trump card revealed during the deal?

A: The trump suit is decided by the dealer’s last card, which is revealed face-up. All cards in this suit are considered trumps for the entire round.

Q: How is the winner of a round decided?

A: Whichever team earns more than 60 points (out of 120) in a round wins it. If both teams score 60 points, it’s a tie.

Q: Can Sueca be played with 2 or 3 players?

A: Yes, but only with significant rule variations. 4-player, 2v2 Sueca is the standard and most balanced version.
