How to Play Durak (Offline) – Complete Guide
Durak is the most popular card game in Russia and neighboring countries. The name Durak means “fool” — and in this strategic shedding game, the goal is simple: don’t be the last player with cards.
🔸 Number of Players:
- 2 to 6 players (or up to 8 using a 52-card deck).
🔸 Cards Used:
- A 36-card deck: 6 through Ace in all four suits (remove 2–5 from a standard 52-card deck).
🔹 Game Setup:
- Shuffle the Deck.
- Deal 6 Cards to each player.
- Flip One Card Face-Up — this determines the trump suit.
- Place the Remaining Cards face-down on top of the trump card at an angle — creating the draw pile.
- The player with the lowest trump starts the game (if tied, the earliest dealer clockwise).
🔹 Objective:
Be the first to get rid of all your cards. The last player left holding cards is the Durak (the Fool).
🔹 Gameplay Phases:
1. Attack Phase
- The attacker plays one card to start the round — usually the lowest card.
- The defender (player to the left) must beat the card by:
- Playing a higher card of the same suit, or
- Playing any card from the trump suit (even if it’s lower).
2. Adding Cards to the Attack
- Other players (starting with the attacker) can add cards of the same rank as those already played (e.g., another 7 if a 7 was used).
- The total number of cards cannot exceed the number of cards in the defender’s hand.
3. Defense Outcome
- If the defender successfully beats all cards, they discard the beaten cards face-down in a separate pile.
- If the defender fails, they pick up all attacking cards and lose the right to attack in the next round.
4. End of Round
- All players refill their hands back to 6 cards (if cards remain in the draw pile), starting with the attacker, then clockwise.
5. Next Turn
- If the defense was successful, the defender becomes the new attacker.
- If not, the next player clockwise from the defender attacks.
🔹 Ending the Game:
- Once the draw pile is empty, players continue without replenishing their hands.
- The first player to empty their hand is safe.
- The last player with cards is the Durak — the fool!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What does “Durak” mean?
A: “Durak” is Russian for “fool.” The last player left with cards gets this title — and often has to deal or perform a penalty in the next game.
Q: Can I play trump cards at any time?
A: Trump cards can only be played to beat a non-trump card or a lower trump during defense.
Q: Can I attack with multiple cards?
A: Yes, as long as you’re using cards that match the ranks already played in that round and do not exceed the defender’s hand size.
Q: What happens if no one can beat a card?
A: If the defender cannot beat all cards, they must pick them up and skip their next turn to attack.
Q: Is there a winning strategy in Durak?
A: Yes! Try to:
- Use non-trump cards early.
- Save trump cards for critical defenses.
- Keep track of what suits opponents have run out of.
Q: What happens when the draw pile runs out?
A: Once the draw pile is depleted, players do not draw new cards. Play continues with the remaining cards in hand.
Q: Can the attacker choose who to attack?
A: No. The attack always moves clockwise, and the next player is the defender.
